I’d been with the company around three and a half months when Brooke asked me if I was interested in increasing my hours again; apparently Lana was going down to two days a week. I was more than happy to do so.

Our respective shifts were now as follows.

Lana: Mon–Tues (8.30 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Me: Wed–Fri (8.30 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

I didn’t ask why Lana was dropping another day, but Brooke unexpectedly let slip that she had some ‘health issues’ that prevented her from working full-time.

‘Oh dear,’ I said. ‘Hope she’s okay.’

Brooke smiled. ‘Nothing too serious.’

I couldn’t help wondering what sort of health issues these might be, but it wouldn’t have been appropriate to question Brooke any further.

When I was alone again, I took a sheet of printer paper from the ream on my desk, and wrote, in no particular order:

broken limb

lower-back pain

heart condition

neurological disorder

cancer
